Philco Model 46-420 'Hippo'
I love restoring these because of the results. You end up with a real sharp looking Philco radio that has a real good sound to it. It even looks better with the lights off because of its back lit dial. A real nice well designed radio. If you don't have one yet, you should.
Work Done
The radio has been completely recapped to last another lifetime. I stuffed the capacitor outside the chassis with a new capacitor, don't let the old Philco casing fool you! I replaced dried cracked rubber mounting gromets with new. See pictures.Case has no cracks or major chips. Case was carefully sanded by hand and painted light antique Ivory. A new polarized power plug was installed along with quality electrolytic capacitors to provide years of service. Tubes tested good, resistors were checked, and chassis was cleaned and polished as best as possible. Dial face was cleaned and polished. knobs original to set and where cleaned. For a better definition on my idea of a complete restoration click here.
Good Points on radio
Fresh paint and a polished dial makes this radio beautiful. All outside surfaces smooth to the touch, no orange peel here! Highly sensitive and a clear as day sound just adds to this radio. This is another great example of a Philco 'Hippo' radio. Original labels, stamps, and tags are still present, see pictures. The Plastic dial is in good condition and is 'smoke' free. Chassis has been cleaned and fresh rubber gromets were installed. All wiring is in great shape including original plastic coated wire. Fresh Philco front decal with gold foil is beautiful and just adds to the set's charm.

Bad Points on radio
Case DID have crack on bottom panel. It was repaired correctly with Epoxy and is not detectable from outside the case. Dial has few small cracks. Speaker had small tear outside of cone and is repaired with speaker glue. No sacrifice to sound quality. No back to radio.
