Philco Model 46-420 'Hippo' This is one of the classics that has been growing in popularity lately. A Philco 'Hippo'! More info on this radio at Philcoradio.com This is a real unique looking radio that looks even better with the lights off because of its dial. I already have a white one in my collection and won't part with it. Wife says no point in having two so here is your chance to have a real clean example of one. Work Done The radio has been completely recapped DON'T LET THE OLD CAPACITOR CASINGS FOOL YOU! I gutted out the old casings and installed new caps inside them to keep the nostalgic look. This was extra work but this radio deserved it. The speaker was reconed because old cone was beyond repair. Case has no cracks or chips. Case was carefully cleaned and polished with GlazeIt to a deep sheen. I am proud of my work so please see pictures on the bottom right of my complete restoration. For a better definition on my idea of a complete restoration click here. A new polarized power plug was installed along with quality electrolytic capacitors to provide years of service. Tubes tested good, mostly philco tubes, and chassis was cleaned. Dial face is in great shape and was cleaned and polished. knobs original to set and where cleaned in agitator. An in line fuse was installed for safety. Good Points on radio This is one of the cleanest 46-420s I have ever worked on. So many good points on this radio it is hard to list them all. The entire case has a brown marblization to it that I tried to capture with the pictures. No cracks or chips, just a fine scratch here and there. Original capacitor casings have been used to keep aged look inside and out. This radio even has its original philco electrolytic capacitor casing which is amazing to have since they would get replaced and thrown out often as they went bad over time. Original cardboard back and front Philco decal. The Plastic dial is in the best condition I have ever seen one in which is 'smoke' free with all number coloring intact. Speaker has been professionally reconed and sounds great. Chassie is polished to a shine and looks untouched. All wiring is in great shape including original plastic coated wire. Highly sensitive and a clear as day sound. This is a great example of a Philco 'Hippo' radio. Bad Points on radio This radio has some hard to see minor scratches. Hardly noticeable but still there. See pictures to right. Back cover is missing one mounting clip, not really missed. WILLING TO SHIP THIS ITEM. I HAVE SHIPPING BOXES AND PACKAGING ON HAND NO CHARGE. I stand behind my work and have a 30 day warrantee on labor NOT PARTS. That means if it breaks in 30 days I will do my best to fix it but you pay for new parts and shipping costs. I do NOT think this is even needed. Please keep in mind this is a really old radio and does not sound or act like a modern radio. It is a show piece and should be treated as such. Keep it honest with me and I will do my best to please you. All sales are final. Thank you for your time. Home Service & Restoration Before & After Shop & Story Radio Gallery Favorite Links |
