Philco Model PT-30   This is a great sounding 1941 Philco AM radio. It has a larger than normal speaker for its size and is highly sensitive with its internal antenna. There were many versions based on the five tube Philco Model 38-12CB chassie but this model seemed to be the winning package with its' highly popular case style, larger speaker for better sound, and it's ability to run on AC or DC. According to Philcoradio.com about 46 thousand were made with an original selling price of $13.95. This is such a great little radio that I look for this particular model at swap meets and have one for my own in my personal collection. Work Done I strove to keep the aged look of this radio. The radio has been completely recapped DON'T LET THE OLD CAPACITOR CASINGS FOOL YOU! I gutted out the old casings and installed new caps inside them to keep the nostalgic look. This was extra work but fun to do. All resistors have been replaced along with the an in line fuse installed for safety. I am proud of my work so please see pictures on the bottom right of my complete restoration. For a better definition on my idea of a complete restoration click here. A new polarized power plug was installed along with quality electrolytic capacitors to provide years of service. Case has no cracks or major chips. The speaker carpet was replaced with a carpet that was as close as possible to the original. Tubes tested good, mostly philco tubes, and chassis was cleaned. Dial face is in fair shape and was not touched to preserve the natural 'aged' look. The original plastic dial shield was extremely yellowed and a new shield was made and installed. knobs original to set and in great shape. Case was carefully cleaned and polished with GlazeIt to a deep sheen. New particle board back was cut by hand to keep nostalgic look and sound of the radio. Good Points on radio A great AM radio for collectors. It has a deep tone with its large speaker and is highly sensitive. It has the great art deco casing and performance to back it up. The case has a brown marblization to it that I tried to capture with the pictures. Hard to do. It has an internal antenna that eliminates the need for a long external wire and can be seen in the pictures to the right. Original capacitor casings have been used to keep aged look inside and out. This radio even has its original philco electrolytic capacitor casing which is amazing to have since they would get replaced and thrown out often as they went bad over time. This is a great looking radio that is a valued radio in any collection. Bad Points on radio This radio has some minor scratches on its case above its dial face. Hardly noticeable but still there. See pictures to right. Speaker carpet and card board back not original but close as possible to original look. Speaker had small tear and was repaired with no sacrifice to sound quality. I stand behind my work and have a 30 day warrantee on labor NOT PARTS. That means if it breaks in 30 days I will do my best to fix it but you pay for new parts and shipping costs. I do NOT think this is even needed. Please keep in mind this is a really old radio and does not sound or act like a modern radio. It is a show piece and should be treated as such.
