Zenith Model 9-S-262 "Shutter Dial"
This is a stunning 1938 Zenith "Shutter Dial face" console. This is the model featured in the Windows98 screensaver. This radio has just had a complete restoration and it is both beautiful and impressive looking. It was built with some really neat features such as the "robot dial" feature, the tuning eye, and the gear driven shutter dial feature. The robot dial lets you zoom from one end of a band to the other by a electric motor. When you turn the center top knob the motor assist is activated in the direction you turn the knob. This is real handy since the manual tuning knob was designed for 'fine' tuning. It is neat to see the brass dial spin fast while the robot dial is being used and is surprisingly quite. The green tuning eye is also handy in tuning in your selected station to the stongest point. As you fine tune your station the green eye expands its green light till the eye is completely open or green. Once you go off channel the eye closes back up till you tune in another channel. This particular console does not have it's original 6T5 tunning eye tube but a really bright 6E5 tube. Brighter than you usually see tuning eyes which leads me to believe that this 6E5 tube is in great shape. The shutter dial feature is another neat feature on this radio and I believe the coolest. As you switch bands, Police, Foreign, and broadcast, the thin metal plates in the center with the band markings are lifted out of the way mechanically to reveal another band benith it. Behind the dial are gears and springs to make it all happen in a flash. More info on this radio on Oldradiozone.com which features an original add of it.
Work Done
Case has a fresh lacquer finish. Original colors were used. The case still has its original Veneer which is Mahogany with birdseye Maple strips. The speaker carpet was replaced with the correct carpet pattern for this set. The radio itself has been recapped and almost all resistors have been replaced along with the an in line fuse installed for safety. I am proud of my work so please see picture on right of my complete restoration. For a better definition on my idea of a complete restoration click here. A new polarized power plug installed along with quality electrolytic capacitors to provide years of service. Tubes tested good and chassis was cleaned. Dial face is in good shape and was not touched to preserve the natural 'aged' look. The dial glass shield is in great shape and was cleaned to a crystal clear finish. The brass face fixture not dented and it's natural patina intact. Original wood carved knobs to set in great shape. Just touched up with lacquer to match rest of console. Still have vintage look to them. Acoustic adapter was repainted gold.
Good Points on radio
An impressive radio in all aspects. It works as good as it looks. I made a point to not make this antique radio loose it's antique charm. It's dial face was left with it's aged wrinkles, the 'patina' was not removed from its brass, and the case has it's original veneer with it's random ding and wave to it. This radio looks like it has been cared for over the years which is part of it's charm. It's electronics are redone to last another sixty years and with the features mentioned before this radio is amazing.

Bad Points on radio
This radio is large. You will need some floor space for a large console. It is also alittle top heavy. When you go to transport it make sure you realize it will tip over if given a good angle.
